Efficacy of Unwinding Anxiety for Generalized Anxiety Disorder

  • Randomized control trial of 65 individuals with moderate to severe anxiety (GAD-7 ≥ 10) testing the efficacy of app-delivered mindfulness training (MT).
  • Individuals were randomized to either receive treatment as usual or treatment as usual along with app-based MT through the Unwinding Anxiety app.
  • Those using Unwinding Anxiety were instructed to complete 30 modules over a 2-month period, and outcomes were assessed at the 1- and 2-month marks through self-reported online questionnaires.
  • Results:
    • Participants in the Unwinding Anxiety group experienced a 67% reduction in anxiety symptoms (assessed via GAD-7) versus a 14% reduction within the control group.
    • This finding demonstrates the clinical efficacy of mindfulness training as a digital therapeutic for individuals with anxiety, with a number needed to treat of 1.6.

Efficacy of Unwinding Anxiety for Physician Anxiety and Burnout

  • Non-randomized pilot study of 34 physicians who worked in a large US health care network and reported having anxiety.
  • The aims of this study were to assess whether app-based mindfulness training (MT) can reduce anxiety in physicians and to explore if anxiety and burnout are correlated, thus leading to a reduction in both anxiety and burnout.
  • Results:
    • Within a month of using the app, individuals reported approximately a 50% reduction in both anxiety and burnout.
    • At three months, anxiety was reported to be 57% lower than at baseline.

Efficacy of Unwinding Anxiety for Worry-Related Sleep Disturbances

  • Randomized clinical trial testing if app-based mindfulness training for anxiety could reduce worry and improve sleep.
  • Worry-related sleep disturbances, worry, non-reactivity, and anxiety were evaluated for the study.
  • Individuals reporting worry interfering with sleep were randomized to treatment as usual (n = 40) or treatment as usual + app-based mindfulness training (n = 40).
  • Results:
    • Worry-related sleep disturbances decreased by 27% in the Unwinding Anxiety group compared to 6% in the treatment as usual group.
    • At 4 months, the treatment as usual group reported a 29% reduction in worry-related sleep disturbances after beginning Unwinding Anxiety at 2 months.
    • Results from this study demonstrate a mechanistic link between mindfulness training and increased emotional non-reactivity, decreased worry, and reduction in reported sleep disturbances, suggesting that app-based mindfulness training may be a viable option to help individuals who report that worry interferes with their sleep.

Real-World Results
